Kings XI Punjab paid a base price of Rs 20 lakhs for Thakur at the 2014 IPL auction, owing to his impressive domestic performance. During his 2015 season debut against the Delhi Daredevils, the courageous medium-pace bowler picked up one wicket in four overs.

Following CSK and RR's suspensions and the ensuing mega-auction, Thakur was signed by the Rising Pune Supergiants, where he played under Steven Smith and MS Dhoni as captains. After being purchased at an auction by the Chennai Super Kings in January 2018, he continued to play for MS Dhoni.

Thakur played sparingly for the Chennai Super Kings in the 2019 Indian Premier League. Despite this, he faced the Mumbai Indians in the final and took two wickets. However, after Thakur was out LBW with two runs on the penultimate delivery, Chennai was unable to clinch the 2019 IPL title.

Shardul has been in great form in the 2021 Indian Premier League. In addition to becoming CSK's highest wicket-taker during the IPL season, he took 21 wickets overall. His superb bowling effort helped CSK win their fourth IPL championship.

Thakur was signed by the Delhi Capitals before the 2022 IPL season for an astronomical INR 10.75 crores. He grabbed 15 wickets during the competition, which was a commendable effort.

Before the 2023 IPL season, Shardul was traded to the Kolkata Knight Riders. He was named the Player of the Match after scoring.
